Course Overview
This course begins with a refresher on chronic renal failure including a discussion of the history of the disease course, signs and symptoms, and calculation of glomerular filtration rate. The second section will focus on the management of chronic renal failure from different perspectives in the course of the disease. The final section will highlight the identification of patients in need of renal replacement and palliative care.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Describe the mechanism of action for each class of medication use to treat chronic renal failure.
  • Discuss what is chronic kidney disease in terms of glomerular filtration rate.
  • List the goals for the management of chronic renal failure.
  • Discuss the “good” and the “bad” associated with kidney transplant.

At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:

  • Describe how the treatments for chronic renal failure work.
  • Discuss the staging of chronic renal failure. 
  • List the suspected factors in the progression of chronic renal failure.
  • Describe the management goals of chronic renal disease.

Tara Muzyk, PharmD 

Tara is a freelance clinical pharmacy writer based in Tampa, Florida. Tara earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in 1998 and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy in 2002. She performed her yearlong residency at ASHP Primary Care.

Tara was Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Southern Nevada College of Pharmacy, and has served as Education Director for the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System. She has extensive experience as a clinical pharmacist, and currently serves as a volunteer Clinical Pharmacist at the Brandon Outreach Clinic in Florida. She is also the Credit Designation Reviewer and Contributing Author for Pharmacy Times, and a Peer Reviewer for the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy and the Federal Practitioner.

She has extensive experience reviewing and authoring pharmacy CE programs.
