Course Overview:

The goal of this program is to study challenges facing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians when including meaningful communication into pharmacy practice in order to improve their patients' health and wellbeing.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Review the legal and professional roles of the pharmacist in communicating with the patient.
  • Discuss how communications can improve the health of the patient.
  • Analyze the role of pharmacy communications in the pharmacy workflow.
  • Identify pharmacy communications as part of the counseling requirement.
  • Explain the role of the pharmacist in patient risk management.
  • Discuss the pharmacists' duty to warn as part of patient safety.

At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:

  • Review how pharmacy technicians can assist pharmacists in fulfilling their legal and professional roles of communicating with the patient.
  • Discuss how communications can improve the health of the patient.
  • Analyze the role of pharmacy technician in facilitating patient communications in the pharmacy.
  • Identify how pharmacy communications can be an important part of pharmacists' counseling requirement.
  • Explain the role of the pharmacy technician in patient risk management.
  • Discuss pharmacists' duty to warn and how pharmacy technicians can help pharmacists satisfy that duty.

 

Faculty:


Joseph P. Vande Griend, PharmD, BCPS, CGP

Dr. Joseph Vande Griend graduated from the University of Iowa with his Doctor of Pharmacy in 2005. He completed both PGY1 (Pharmacy Practice) and PGY2 (Family Medicine) training at the University of Colorado Hospital and School of Pharmacy. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is also privileged to be a geriatric clinical pharmacist at the University of Colorado Seniors Clinic. At the clinic, he provides medication therapy management (MTM), performs drug therapy consultations, and serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents. His research interests include Geriatric Pharmacotherapy and the provision of innovative clinical pharmacy services in primary care with a focus on the elderly population.
