Course Overview
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in America and is associated with significant morbidity. COPD is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory, destructive lung disease that encompasses emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD often develops secondary to chronic cigarette smoking and is associated with the development of lung cancer. Symptoms include cough, dyspnea (shortness of breath), fatigue, and reduced exercise tolerance. Acute exacerbations of COPD can be triggered by respiratory infections and are potentially life-threatening. Repetitive COPD exacerbations may worsen lung function and can trigger greater deterioration of health over time. This webinar will equip pharmacy professionals with a better understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features and treatment of COPD. An overview of relevant features of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines will be presented.
