Course Overview:

This two-hour CE presentation will improve the participants' understanding of medications used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction, and male urinary tract infections. Topics include the pharmacology of medications (such as selective and non-selective alpha blockers, herbal medications, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, and various antibiotics) with a focus on dosing, adverse effects, drug monitoring, and drug-drug interactions. Additionally, the therapeutic use of these medications in the treatment of men’s health disorders will be discussed. By the end of this program, participants should be able to apply the information they have learned in their clinical setting to improve the care of their patients.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • List the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Discuss the use, contraindications, and risks of medications utilized in the treatment of BPH
  • Describe the pathology of erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Review the use, contraindications, and risks of medications utilized in the treatment of erectile dysfunction
  • Discuss the symptoms and treatment options for male UTIs
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:
  • State one sign and one symptom of BPH
  • List two medications used in the treatment of BPH
  • List two medications used in the treatment of ED
  • Discuss medications that worsen ED

Andrew Muzyk, PharmD

Dr. Andrew J. Muzyk is an Assistant Professor at Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Buies Creek, NC and practices as a Clinical Pharmacist at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. Dr. Muzyk specializes in the practice of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry and is a member of the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry medicine team at Duke University Hospital and the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry medicine residency program at Duke University School of Medicine.

Dr. Muzyk graduated from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Mercer University in Atlanta, GA. Prior to coming to CPHS, Dr. Muzyk completed a PGY-1 residency in Pharmacy Practice at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL followed by a PGY-2 residency in Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Dr. Muzyk held adjunct Clinical Professor appointments at the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University and Eshelman School of Pharmacy at UNC.
