Learning Objectives:

 At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to

1. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of insulin therapy in the Type 2 Patient.
2. Identify the rationale for dosing and prescribing Basal and BiPhasic insulin therapy.
3. Differentiate between the various types of commercially available insulin and identify their respective roles in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes.
4. Define the Role of Self Monitoring Blood Glucose (SMBG) for Patients on Insulin Therapy.

At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:

1. Describe 2 advantages of insulin therapy in the Type 2 Diabetes patient .
2. Name one rationale for dosing and prescribing basal insulin.
3. Name one rationale for dosing and prescribing BiPhasic insulin therapy.
4. Define the role of self monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) for patients on insulin therapy.

Tara is a freelance clinical pharmacy writer based in Tampa, Florida. Tara earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in 1998 and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy in 2002. She performed her yearlong residency at ASHP Primary Care.

Tara was Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Southern Nevada College of Pharmacy, and has served as Education Director for the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System. She has extensive experience as a clinical pharmacist, and currently serves as a volunteer Clinical Pharmacist at the Brandon Outreach Clinic in Florida. She is also the Credit Designation Reviewer and Contributing Author for Pharmacy Times, and a Peer Reviewer for the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy and the Federal Practitioner.

She has extensive experience reviewing and authoring pharmacy CE programs.
