Course Overview:

This two-hour CE presentation will discuss the presentation and treatment of a number of issues in the treatment of MDD. Active learning exercises will be utilized to enhance the understanding of the material presented. At the completion of this presentation the audience members should be able to describe the signs and symptoms of this disorder and discuss the treatment options (doses, adverse effects, and monitoring parameters) for MDD and create a treatment algorithm based on recent literature.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the diagnosis and symptom presentation of MDD
  • Describe the basic pharmacology of antidepressants
  • List main side effect profiles for different classes of antidepressants
  • Formulate a treatment algorithm for MDD
  • Evaluate the role of antipsychotics for adjunct treatment of MDD
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:
  • State one sign and one symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • List medications used in the treatment of MDD
  • List one adverse effect and one monitoring parameter for treatments used in MDD
  • Discuss medications that interact with drugs used in the treatment of MDD

Andrew Muzyk, PharmD

Dr. Andrew J. Muzyk is an Assistant Professor at Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Buies Creek, NC and practices as a Clinical Pharmacist at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. Dr. Muzyk specializes in the practice of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry and is a member of the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry medicine team at Duke University Hospital and the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry medicine residency program at Duke University School of Medicine.

Dr. Muzyk graduated from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Mercer University in Atlanta, GA. Prior to coming to CPHS, Dr. Muzyk completed a PGY-1 residency in Pharmacy Practice at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL followed by a PGY-2 residency in Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Dr. Muzyk held adjunct Clinical Professor appointments at the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University and Eshelman School of Pharmacy at UNC.
