Course Overview
In this webinar we will examine the basic pharmacology of marijuana constituents (cannabinoids), including their different sources, chemistry, mechanism(s) of action, pharmacokinetics, possible therapeutic benefits, side effects, potential interactions and more. We will also review clinical evidence, both positive and negative, for a number of suggested-therapeutic uses such as muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, nausea from cancer chemotherapy, poor appetite and weight loss caused by chronic illness (i.e., HIV), various types of pain, seizure disorders, inflammation, psychiatric disorders and others. 

NOTE:
This webinar is solely an examination of the science of marijuana and will not address any of the legislative and legal issues regarding medical marijuana at the state or federal levels.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Review the basic and clinical pharmacology of botanical and synthetic marijuana and their active constituents.
  • List various types and dosage formulations of medical marijuana available to patients.
  • Discuss a number of possible uses for, and clinical study data regarding, the effectiveness of medical marijuana.
  • Recognize potential physical and psychiatric side effects and drug interactions that may occur with the use of marijuana.
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:
  • Review the basic and clinical pharmacology of botanical and synthetic marijuana and their active constituents.

Alan P. Agins, PhD 
Alan Agins received a Masters in Pharmacology & Toxicology and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. He has held faculty appointments at Brown University Medical School, Northeastern University School of Pharmacy and University of Virginia School of Nursing. During his tenure at Brown, Dr Agins was the recipient of the Dean's Teaching Excellence Award for five consecutive years. As founder and president of PRN Associates, Dr. Agins has lectured nationally on all topics of pharmacology to more than 90,000 advanced practice clinicians and allied healthcare professionals over the past 24 years. In addition to his early research-related publications at Brown, he has authored 2 book and co-authored one book. Alan began speaking for RxSchool in the Spring of 2007.
