Course Overview
Over the past decade, a significant number of continuing medical education programs regarding opioids have focused heavily on opioid abuse, addiction and overdose. Unfortunately, many of those programs have abridged or completely omitted content reviewing and updating the basic and clinical pharmacology of the opioids as a class, especially examining key differences between the individual opioid agents - such as differences in pharmacodynamics (receptor subtypes / affinity, agonist/partial agonist, dual-acting agents, potency, tolerance, etc) and pharmacokinetics (half-lives, renal clearance, hepatic clearance, active metabolites, pro-drug activation, etc) which are important for healthcare professionals to know and to educate patients about. In that regard, this webinar aims to refresh and solidify the pharmacist’s, pharmacy technician’s and nurse practitioner’s knowledge of the basic and clinical pharmacology of the opioids.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Review the pathophysiology of pain including the various types and those most/least amenable to opioids
  • Compare and contrast the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the most common opioids used in pain management.
  • Recognize which opioids may be affected by renal and/or hepatic impairment as well as drug interactions and the potential clinical impact
  • List a number of rationales for opioid rotation
  • Define incomplete cross-tolerance and its importance in equianalgesic dose calculations
  • Discuss physical dependence to opioids and characteristics of both abstinence and precipitated withdrawal.

Alan P. Agins, PhD 
Alan Agins received a Masters in Pharmacology & Toxicology and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. He has held faculty appointments at Brown University Medical School, Northeastern University School of Pharmacy and University of Virginia School of Nursing. During his tenure at Brown, Dr Agins was the recipient of the Dean's Teaching Excellence Award for five consecutive years. As founder and president of PRN Associates, Dr. Agins has lectured nationally on all topics of pharmacology to more than 90,000 advanced practice clinicians and allied healthcare professionals over the past 24 years. In addition to his early research-related publications at Brown, he has authored 2 book and co-authored one book. Alan began speaking for RxSchool in the Spring of 2007.
