Course Overview:

This two-hour CE presentation will discuss the presentation and treatment of alcohol withdrawal and alcohol use disorders. It will focus on the effectiveness, adverse effects and monitoring parameters for medications used for these two conditions with the intent of developing a therapeutic plan for patients prescribed these treatments. At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to describe the presentation of alcohol withdrawal, alcohol use disorders, and discuss treatment options.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:

  • Describe the presentation of alcohol withdrawal
  • Construct a treatment algorithm for benzodiazepines and adjunctive treatments for alcohol withdrawal
  • Create a monitoring plan for benzodiazepines and adjunctive treatments for alcohol withdrawal
  • Explain the presentation of alcohol use disorders
  • Construct a treatment algorithm for alcohol use disorders
  • Create a monitoring plan for medications used in the treatment of alcohol use disorders
At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacy technician will be able to:
  • List three medications used in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal
  • Describe one sign and one symptom of alcohol withdrawal
  • Name two medications used in the treatment of alcohol use disorders
  • Discuss two side effects for medications used to treat alcohol use disorders

Andrew Muzyk, PharmD

Dr. Andrew J. Muzyk is an Assistant Professor at Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Buies Creek, NC and practices as a Clinical Pharmacist at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. Dr. Muzyk specializes in the practice of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry and is a member of the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry medicine team at Duke University Hospital and the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry medicine residency program at Duke University School of Medicine.

Dr. Muzyk graduated from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Mercer University in Atlanta, GA. Prior to coming to CPHS, Dr. Muzyk completed a PGY-1 residency in Pharmacy Practice at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL followed by a PGY-2 residency in Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Dr. Muzyk held adjunct Clinical Professor appointments at the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University and Eshelman School of Pharmacy at UNC.
